Abano Audiology

Abano entered the audiology market in October 2005, with the acquisition of 70 percent of Bay Audiology which in turn owned 40 percent of Dilworth Hearing.

In early 2007, Abano entered the Australian market with the acquisition and establishment of four practices around Brisbane, under the Bay Audio brand. This network continues to grow through acquisition and the opening of new clinics. Bay Audio is run by an Australian based manager, who also has audiology clinical experience as well as country experience in the audiology sector.

In December 2008, Abano entered the Asian audiology market with investment into a number of small audiology clinics in Singapore and Hong Kong.  The Asian audiology footprint was expanded in July 2009 when Abano invested in two stores in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Abano operates two brands in these markets - Dynasound in Hong Kong and Sountex in Malaysia and Singapore. Bay Asia is overseen by a regional manager who works closely with individual country managers.

In November 2009, Abano sold its interest in Bay Audiology New Zealand to National Hearing Care and acquired a share in the new merged Australasian audiology business. This 13 percent share is held on a 50:50 basis with interests associated with Peter Hutson, one of the founders of Bay Audiology.

Abano's future strategy in audiology is to focus on the growth of its audiology businesses in Australia and across Asia, all markets with large populations, high demand for audiology services and offering significant future opportunities. These businesses are owned by Bay International, in which shares are held on a 50:50 basis between Abano and interests associated with Peter Hutson.

Demand for audiology services is growing strongly. Although hearing loss is more common amongst those aged over sixty, now comprising around one third of the population, hearing problems can affect all ages and demand is growing for new and improved hearing services and devices. In most OECD countries, including New Zealand, Australia and Asia one in nine people are affected by hearing difficulties. However, whereas 20 to 30 percent of these people are treated for hearing loss in New Zealand and Australia, in Asia the treatment rate is well below five percent.

Careers

Abano has vacancies for full and part time audiologists in our clinics in Australia. Our Audiologists enjoy using the latest technology and equipment, and are well resourced and supported in their work. We have a large administration team and strong marketing support to ensure the clinics are operating smoothly and efficiently. This enables the Audiologists to focus on their clinical work.

There are excellent opportunities for audiologists who wish to develop their careers. The positions would ideally suit Audiologists with Clinical Certificate and more than one year's work experience, who can work independently and have a particular interest in hearing aid dispensing.
